"Merging Academics and Athletics through group mentoring to create responsible young adults who excel".
What We Do
We provide group Mentoring, youth leadership development, and team building to student athletes. This is done through a group setting where common interests lay. We take extra curricular activities such as sports and use a set agenda to instruct on:
-
Goal setting
-
Teamwork
-
Balancing sports, academics, and life
-
Prep for higher education
-
Building self confidence
-
Effective time management
-
Developing winning attitudes
Our mentors serve as the lifeskills coach for the student athletes and are required to complete an orientation and screening prior to participation. They are also required to committ to at least one semester of volunteering and additional training during that semester. The mentoring program is intended to compliment the mission of the schools athletic department.
Group Mentoring setting
Youth work best when they are engaged in activities that they are interested in. Usually, this occurs in group activities that they feel they are strong in, like sports, or music, or drama. Our group mentoring program uses the Power of Peer Relationships: Mentors facilitating group sessions can use peer-to-peer relationships to empower mentees and influence them in positive ways. Group mentoring also helps young people build camaraderie and social skills.
Program Outcomes
Young people who were at-risk for not completing high school but who had a ment or
reported higher educational aspirations and matriculation into post-secondary education, as
well as greater engagement in positive activities.
They were:
-
55% more likely to be enrolled in college than those who did not have a mentor.
-
81% more likely to report participating regularly in sports or extracurricular activities.
-
More than twice as likely to say they held a leadership position in a club or sports team.
-
78% more likely to volunteer regularly in their communities.
-
Nearly nine in ten respondents who had a mentor said they are now interested in
becoming mentors.
