Osseo Area Learning Center Wraps up  for the year - 2016!

The OALC Let's Rap Mentoring program just wrapped up after a successful 2 months of sessions customed to address the needs of the youth attending this alternative school. The most notable accomplishment was discussing Black Male Achievement and what does it means to them and why it's important to change the narrative of African American boys.

Here's a brief recap of some of the topics:

Basic life skills

  • Avoiding the School to Prison Pipeline

  • Surviving encounters with the Police

  • Goal setting

  • Understanding Purpose

  • Image is everything - Learning to tie a tie

  • Changing the Culture - implemented Shirt and Tie Thursday

To help change the culture, we held a session on tie tying, then designated a day to have Shirt and Tie day. The results were outstanding. Even the teachers participated in the efforts.
